Rafael Durancamps i Folguera

BIOGRAPHY

Rafael Durancamps i Folguera (Sabadell, 1891 – Barcelona, 1979) was a renowned Spanish figurative painter associated with pictorial realism.

After training under Joan Vila Cinca and absorbing Joaquim Mir’s influence on colour, he refined his technique through self-directed study of the Baroque masters at the Museo del Prado.

He lived in Paris from 1926 to 1938, a period during which he established his international reputation before returning to Barcelona, where he became a key figure in post-war Catalan painting.

His artistic output is distinguished by its technical rigour, restrained use of light and strong preference for still lifes, landscapes of Cadaqués and bullfighting scenes.
