Manolo Hugué

BIOGRAPHY

Manolo Hugué (Barcelona, 1872 – Caldes de Montbui, 1943), whose real name was Manuel Martínez Hugué, was a prominent Spanish sculptor, painter and printmaker, considered one of the key figures of Catalan Noucentisme.

After a bohemian youth in Barcelona, he moved to Paris in 1901, where he became part of the artistic avant-garde alongside his close friend Pablo Picasso and the Montmartre group.

His style matured in the French town of Céret, where he masterfully blended Mediterranean classicism with the formal simplification of Cubism, while never abandoning figurative art.

His work, expressed primarily through bronze sculptures, reliefs and terracotta pieces, celebrates popular themes, nature and the female figure through solid, static forms imbued with profound serenity.
