Celso Lagar Arroyo

BIOGRAPHY

Celso Lagar Arroyo (Ciudad Rodrigo, 1891 – Seville, 1966) was a prominent Spanish painter and sculptor who belonged to the first generation of the prestigious School of Paris.

After beginning his artistic training in Madrid and Barcelona, he settled in the French capital in 1911, where he formed close friendships with leading figures of the international avant-garde, such as Amedeo Modigliani and Pablo Picasso.

Throughout his career, he interpreted innovative artistic movements such as Cubism and Fauvism in a highly personal way, even developing his own pictorial style, known as Planism.

Lagar is particularly renowned for his colourful landscapes, evocative nudes and, most distinctively, his poetic scenes depicting the world of the circus and clowns.

His valuable work is now held in major institutions such as the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum and the Patio Herreriano Museum.
