Emilio Grau Sala

BIOGRAPHY

Emilio Grau Sala (Barcelona, 1911 – Sitges, 1975) was a Spanish painter and illustrator internationally recognised as one of the most vibrant figures of the School of Paris.

After studying at the Escola de Belles Arts de Sant Jordi, he moved to France in 1936 because of the Spanish Civil War, where he developed a highly personal figurative style rooted in Impressionism and Fauvism.

His work stands out for its use of vivid colours, lively brushwork and subject matter centred on fashionable social settings, domestic interiors, circus scenes and high society.

In addition to his prolific painting career, he distinguished himself in theatrical set design and in illustrating literary classics such as *Madame Bovary*.

He returned to Spain in the final years of his life, leaving behind an artistic legacy characterised by visual optimism, lyricism and chromatic elegance.
